Why Do Some Roofers Practice Reroofing?
The main objective of reroofing, as opposed to the standard practice of stripping the old roof before installation, is to save on removal and disposal costs. Reroofing is also done when roof replacement needs to be done in the shortest time possible.
It’s important to note that in most cases, the said pros are outweighed by its cons. Reroofing skips fundamental steps, such as structural repairs. If the roof has hidden issues, such as damage from trapped moisture, it won’t be addressed during installation. It also doubles the weight of the roof if you’re replacing it with the same type of roofing material. This can be a problem if the support structure isn’t built to carry such weight. The fasteners will likewise be doubled, which can compromise roofing integrity.
Reroofing With Metal
Some roofing contractors recommend reroofing with standing seam metal because the total roof weight is but a fraction of a standard asphalt shingle roof, which helps preserve the roofing integrity.
However, before you decide on reroofing with a metal roof, you have to keep in mind that there are specific conditions that make reroofing with a metal roof safe. For instance, decking isn’t suitable for a third replacement, regardless of condition, so a third installation with the same decking won’t be structurally sound. Roofing that obviously requires repair will, of course, need to be stripped.
